Cons -n- Stuff
Last weekend was Wondercon. I want to thank everyone who came by the Oni Press booth to say hello. For you local Bay Area residents that missed it, or didn't get by the Oni booth because you didn't know I was there, don't be disappointed. You can come see me next month at APE on the 21st and 22nd, and I'll happily fill you in on the details on my upcoming projects. APE is my favorite convention in the Bay Area, and well worth seeing. Plus, by buddy Karl Christian will be there as a guest of the show with his new Slave Labor book, Byron. You should check it out.

APE is the devil. I seem to be alone in my hate for it.

why do you hate it?

Mostly for petty and immature reasons. I recognize that for many it's an ideal convention, but for me it's a saleless grind. I really do better at a WonderCon type show.

I'm thinking of switching cons myself. My sales are pretty low there.

Funny, APE used to offer great sales back when it was in Early Feb. Now that they've moved it to a week after tax time, it's not nearly as lucrative. I still do better than at Wondercon, though. I never seem to do that well there. I think my fans associate me with alternative press. Don't ask me why. I'm much more Indy than Alt.

I was wondering how New York was for you. I meant to ask at WonderCon, but you looked busy whenever I walked by.

I think it has more to do with wondercon than taxes... people go to wondercon, meet all the people, and spend al their money.

More indy than alt. That's funny.

That's my theory as well, APE is all about the Alt comics, and we're more Indie. It's so 'West Side Story'. ; )

Still, Ape's just fun for how dedicated everyone is.

what is the diff between indy and alt? Is indy self-published and alt is something like Oni? I'm asking because I honestly don't know.

You know, I've never completely understood it either, but to me Alt implies more DIY, homemade shirts and little stickers, that kind of thing. Knitting cute stuffed animals with multiple eyes and bulbous heads. Indie would be more Oni, or even self published work bu† with a certain presence that's established in the comics world. In other words, a fringe of mainstream comics is 'indie' and coming from outside of the comics world is 'alt'.

So perhaps, you and Ted are Indie as you have an established presence, I'm still alt because no one's heard of me. ; )

Indy is Oni and Slave Labor. BW, unusualy, but still pop-culturey. Alt is Top Shelf, all emo and often autobiographical. Hard to say where shannon's work falls.

In regards to sales, the best show I've done in a long time was New York Comicon the other week. Small, but I actually sold out of a few things, which is uncommon for me. Though to be fair, I was sitting between Evan and Jhonen. My sales really couldn't be poor in that scenario.

that is a pretty good spot. though, I was next to some marvel comics guy once and he ruined my sales.

Hey as well, Shannon.

Ted, you should know by now that you are the great nexus of the Bay Area. Everyone I meet already knows you. People I've known since I was 10 already know you. Isn't it natural that we would all be drawn to your journal like so many moths?

Hi there! I wanted to thank you again for the gorgeous Polly picture you drew in my sketchbook (which I am still squeeing over, in general) on Saturday afternoon. It was wonderful meeting you, great talking fairy tales, and it all added to an overall fantastic con experience (I've meant to get to WC and APE for years, and have determined that 2007 is finally when it'll happen).

Ted - sorry didn't get to talk much at the show. But it was good seeing you. Looking forward to the new Courtney.

From my unscientific survey those at Wondercon and NYCC sold more at Wondercon. I have been the last two years and really enjoyed it. Of course, now that my book is coming out...that helps!

Salut! Au sujet de Poitier, il faut d'abord demander a Akileos quand ca va passer. Pour le moment, c'est quoi la specialité (gastronomique) de Poitier?

A+

Take it easy and good luck with the deadline thing. (^_~)
